Sailing

The Forth Estuary Forum's On the Forth, A leisure craft users guide to the Firth of Forth (pdf) is a useful source of information.

Forth Ports Notice to Mariners

The Forth Yacht Clubs Association has links to many sailing clubs in the area, many useful links and also a guide to many cruising destinations in the Forth.

Port Edgar Marina & Sailing school offers a five day dinghy cruising course incorporating the RYA Seamanship and Day Sailing modules. The course is recommended by a contributor to this Pilot. Follow links to adult dinghy courses from their home page.

Port Edgar Marina & Sailing certainly used to hire Wayfarers and Wanderers, though this is no longer evident from their website. Might be worth contacting them.

Access Rights

Thanks to the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003, responsible access to most land and inland waters in Scotland is permitted for recreational purposes. What this means is set out in the Outdoor Access Code.

The Scottish Marine Wildlife Watching Code  offers advice for all those who want to watch marine wildlife responsibly around Scotland - whether they are on the shore or at sea. It's not a law or regulation but its over-riding purpose is to raise awareness and offer practical guidance to help protect vulnerable wildlife.

History & Environment

As the purpose of the pilot is primarily to provide information about facilities and pilotage for dinghy cruisers, we have avoided the temptation to link to liberally sources of information about particular places. However, for places where knowledge of the history and natural environment may particularly add to the enjoyment of the visit, we may add more links over time - suggestions welcome!

Forth Estuary Forum  is a voluntary partnership of organisations around the Forth with an interest in the wellbeing of the Forth and its coastal communities. Useful publications include On the Forth, A leisure craft users guide to the Firth of Forth (pdf)

ScotlandsPlaces allows you search documents, maps and images from a number of databases.

ports.org.uk provides interesting historical information about ports - and former ports - around Britain, including the UK's smallest harbour at Seacliffe which is on the Firth of Forth (in the pilot here).

Scotland's Environment Web "brings together information on Scotland's environment in one place. There is nowhere else that environmental data and reports from known and trusted sources can be accessed and looked at in combination." For information about coastal waters, including the Firth of Forth, start here.

Scotland's Marine Atlas is an assessment of the condition of Scotland's seas, based on scientific evidence from data and analysis, supported by expert judgement. The section including the Firth of Forth is here (pdf).
